Virgin
This is a reminder courtesy. And no, it’s not a joke. During the Christmas season, the word VIRGIN is going to get thrown around. A lot. And even though your student may have been around church a lot or a little, and even though they may watch a lot of TV and content that explains a lot, there are still some terms they may have questions about. I guarantee VIRGIN is one of them. So before someone gets up and reads the passage in Luke 1 where it says “…to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David…” and someone throws up their hand to ask the crowd “What’s a virgin?” please do me a solid. Explain what a virgin is to your twelve year old. In fact, let’s go ahead and start “the talk” with your student if you haven’t yet. They’re 11 or 12 by this point. They should know. And guess what? Christmas is a great time to explain that to them. It comes up naturally! Why was Jesus’ birth such a big deal? Mary asked the question herself a few verses later: “Mary asked the angel, ‘How can this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man?’” There’s your starting point for how bodies work and babies are born and all of that. Sure it’s awkward to talk to your kids about sex. It’s way more awkward for me to talk to your kids about sex in a room full of other pre-teens and teenagers. So, thanks in advance for telling your student what a virgin is. You’re doing us both a favor. 😂😂 |
